How to Move with Pets: Tips from Your Dog’s Favorite Real Estate Agent

Writer: Meg WalkerMeg Walker

Moving to a new home is an adventure, but if you’ve got furry friends in tow, it can also be a little ruff (see what I did there?). As your dog’s favorite real estate agent, I’ve seen it all—from tail wags in the backyard to epic meltdowns over a new neighbor cat. To help make your move as stress-free as possible, here are my top tips for moving with pets, straight from someone who knows how much they mean to you.

Before the Move: Prep Like a Pro

  1. Introduce Moving Supplies Early

If your pets are anything like mine, the sight of boxes can spark curiosity… or panic. Bring out the moving supplies a few weeks early so they can get used to the new scenery without associating it with major change.

  2. Update Tags and Microchip Info

Moving to a new address? Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip are up-to-date. A new environment can be disorienting for pets, and you’ll want to ensure they can find their way back to you if they wander off.

  3. Plan Ahead for Travel

Whether you’re moving across town or cross-country, plan how you’ll transport your pets. Secure carriers for cats and small dogs, or harnesses for larger pups. If your pet gets anxious in the car, consider test drives beforehand or talk to your vet about calming options.

  4. Pack a Pet Essentials Bag

Think of this as your pet’s overnight bag. Include food, water, bowls, medications, favorite toys, a leash, and anything else they’ll need for a couple of days. Trust me, having these items handy will make life so much easier during the chaos of moving day.

During the Move: Keep Calm and Carry Treats

  1. Create a Safe Space

On moving day, set up a quiet, secure area for your pets. This could be a closed-off room with their bed, toys, and water or even a trusted friend’s house. Keeping them away from the hustle and bustle will reduce stress (for both of you).

  2. Stick to Their Routine

Pets thrive on routine, so try to keep their schedule consistent. Feed them at the usual times, take them on their regular walks, and sneak in a few extra belly rubs for good measure.

  3. Transport Them Safely

When it’s time to hit the road, ensure your pets are secure. Use carriers or harnesses, and never let them roam freely in the car—it’s safer for everyone involved.

After the Move: Welcome Home!

  1. Pet-Proof Your New Space

Before you let your pets explore, check for potential hazards like exposed wires, toxic plants, or small spaces they could get stuck in.

  2. Introduce Them Slowly

Let your pets explore one room at a time, starting with a space that has familiar items like their bed and toys. Gradually expand their access to the rest of the home as they become comfortable.

  3. Explore Together

If you’ve moved to a new neighborhood, take your pup on walks to familiarize them with the area. Sniffing is their version of Google Maps, after all! Find nearby dog parks, trails, and pet-friendly spots to make the transition exciting.

  4. Keep an Eye on Their Behavior

It’s normal for pets to feel a little out of sorts after a move. Be patient, and if you notice signs of extreme stress (like loss of appetite or unusual behavior), consult your vet for guidance.

Bonus Tips for a Dog Parent’s Dream Move

  • Look for Dog-Friendly Features in Your New Home: As your go-to expert for pup-approved properties, I’m always on the lookout for homes with fenced yards, nearby trails, or even built-in dog wash stations.

  • Make Moving Fun: Turn unpacking into a game! Hide treats around the house for your pets to sniff out. It’s a great way to help them feel at home while keeping them entertained.

  • Celebrate the Move: Once you’re settled, throw a “welcome home” paw-ty for your pets and invite your new neighbors (and their furry friends) to join the fun.

Moving with pets may take a little extra planning, but it’s worth it to see those tails wagging in your new home. Need help finding a place your whole pack will love? As someone who’s just as passionate about pets as I am about real estate, I’d be thrilled to help you find the perfect spot. After all, happy paws make for happy homes!
